Water Baptism
Romans 6:3-5--
"3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was
raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk
in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also
in the likeness of his resurrection:"
Water is not mentioned. How was Christ raised from the dead? By the Spirit-
Ck. Romans 8:11
"11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead
dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal
bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you."
Cf. I Cor. 12:13--
"13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether
we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to
drink into one Spirit."
Then Col. 2:11,12--
"11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision
made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the
circumcision of Christ:
"12 Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the
faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead."
Key words, 'through faith'.
Just as circumcision of the foreskin in the Old Testament was a type of the real
circumcision (of the heart)...
Ck. Eph. 2:11-16--
"11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles
in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the
Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth
of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without
God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the
blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle
wall of partition between us;
15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making
peace;
16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having
slain the enmity thereby:"
It doesn't say by the cross and water baptism!
Phil. 3:3
"3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and
rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."
Once again Col. 2:11--
"11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision
made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the
circumcision of Christ:"
Cf. Deut. 30:6--
"6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the
heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy
soul, that thou mayest live."
Even so water baptism is a type of the real baptism (Spirit baptism). John the
Baptist was last of the Old Testament prophets and he used types as every other
prophet did before him to show a reality.
Paul wasn't sent to baptize but to preach the gospel.
Ck. 1 Cor. 1:17--
"17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel:
not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect."
And by reading the preceeding verses, we see that he was talking about water
baptism.
So the one baptism can't be water, it must be Spirit - Ck. v. 4.
"4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you
by Jesus Christ;"
Let's check some scriptures:
Mark 1:8--"8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you
with the Holy Ghost."
Acts 1:5--
"5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the
Holy Ghost not many days hence."
Luke 12:50--
"50 But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I
straitened till it be accomplished!"
Are these preceeding verses talking about water baptism? Why not? Remember Eph. 4:5.
"5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,"
Also Matt. 20:22 goes with Luke 12:50 mentioned above.
"22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink
of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am
baptized with? They say unto him, We are able."
That is not water!!!
Speaking on faith and reading James 2:21-22-23 is regarding what you see but God looks on the heart...
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his
son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made
perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was
imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Tie this in with Rom. 4:1-3-6 in reference to what God sees...
1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath
found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before
God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto
him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his
faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God
imputeth righteousness without works,
Cf. 1 Sam. 16:7b
"7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height
of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."
Heart is purified by faith (Acts 15:9 cf. Matt. 5:8)
Acts 15:9 "And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by
faith."
Matthew 5:8 "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God."
Hearing of faith or through faith, Acts 10:43-45.
"43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever
believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard
the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came
with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy
Ghost."
Concerning baptism continued
John the Baptist, last of the Old Testament prophets used types and figures just like
every Old Testament prophet did before him and cleansings were by sprinkling in
the O.T. (Ck. Luke 16:16)
"16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that
time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it."
(Ck. Lev. 16:14-19; Num. 8:7; Ezek. 36:25-27).
Lev. "14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his
finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle
of the blood with his finger seven times.
15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring
his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the
bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:
16 And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness
of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and
so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them
in the midst of their uncleanness.
17 And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth
in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an
atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an
atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the
goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.
19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and
cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel."
Numbers 8:7
"7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water
of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their
clothes, and so make themselves clean."
Ezekiel 36:25-37
"25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean:
from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I
will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of
flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and
ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my
people, and I will be your God.
29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn,
and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.
30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye
shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not
good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your
abominations.
32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be
ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.
33 Thus saith the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all
your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be
builded.
34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all
that passed by.
35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of
Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are
inhabited.
36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD
build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the LORD have spoken
it, and I will do it.
37 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of
Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock."
Here we see sprinkling, whether blood or water so the "baptism" in the O.T.
was sprinkling. Now we need to see that this was a type of the blood of the Son
of God and the water was a type of the word of God as we see in Eph. 5:26.
Which also lines up with II Tim. 3:15 where we see that Timothy has known the
scriptures as a child which is able to make him wise unto salvation through faith
in Jesus Christ.
Salvation is a free gift
John 3:16
"16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Believing with your whole heart (your total being) is receiving Him into your life
not just a head belief that doesn't save.
James 2:17-20
"17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith
without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe,
and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?"
John 1:12
"12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become
the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"
Eph. 2:8,9
"8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast."
Rom. 4:5,6
"5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the
ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God
imputeth righteousness without works,"
Gal. 3:20-28
"20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been
a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by
the law.
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus
Christ might be given to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which
should afterwards be revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might
be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither
male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."
Rom. 3:20-28
"20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be
justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being
witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and
upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ
Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to
declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the
forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the
justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the
law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the
law."
II Cor. 5:17-21
"17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ,
and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing
their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us:
we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him."
cf. I John 3:4-9
"4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin
is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him,
neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous,
even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning.
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works
of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him:
and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."
And Phil. 2:13
"13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his
good pleasure."
Works vs Grace-
Gal. 5:4
"4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of
you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace."
Rom. 4:1-8
"1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to
the flesh, hath found?
2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before
God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto
him for righteousness.
4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his
faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God
imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are
covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin."
Rom. 11:6
"And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no
more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no
more work."
Speaking on the word- 'Eis' pronounced 'ace'
Acts 2:38 - 'for' (KJV) "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Matt. 12:41 - 'at' (KJV) "The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with
this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of
Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here."
Question:
In these two verses above we have the word "for" and the word "at" which came
from the greek word, "Eis" prounced "ace" in English. Two questions...
1) Did they get baptized to receive remisson of sins of because they already had it?
It is like the illustration, 'When you take an aspirin for a headache, do you take one
to get a headache or because you already have one? Of course, I would advise prayer instead of the aspirin.
2) Did they repent to get the preaching of Jonah or because they already
had it? Likewise, do you get baptized to get remission of sins or because you
already have it?
Born-again because of or through the word, also our growth is dependent upon it.
1 Peter 1:23-2:3 --
"1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed,
but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The
grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the
gospel is preached unto you.
1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and
envies, and all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow
thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious."
cf. Heb. 5:12-14
"12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you
again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as
have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he
is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by
reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."
Washing of water by the word- sanctification
Titus 3:5 --"5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according
to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the
Holy Ghost;"
Eph. 5:26 --"26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of
water by the word,"
John 17:17
"17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Also cf. John 15:7 --
"7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask
what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
Trying to figure out spiritual truth with carnal logic just doesn't work. Example:
Roman Catholics believe that they are literally eating the body and drinking the
blood of Jesus. And they use John 6 to prove it. Not only is it not true in the
original languages, it is not true in context.
If you put yourself under the law and salvation is through it, then you are a debtor
to do all of it (cf. Gal. 5:4).
"4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever
of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace."
(Cf. James 2:10)
"10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in
one point, he is guilty of all."
Let's take the Ten Commandments in Ex. 20:1-17 not counting all of the other
commandments in the Bible.
Exodus 20:3-5, 7-9, 12-17--
"3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing
that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:...
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD
will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
12 Honour thy father and thy mother:..
13 Thou shalt not kill.
14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15 Thou shalt not steal.
16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17 Thou shalt not covet...."
A few questions...
Are you keeping the Sabbath Day holy?
Tie this with Col. 2:13-17
"13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath
he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was
contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them
openly, triumphing over them in it.
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an
holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ."
How about adultery? How are you doing there?
Ck. Matt. 5:27-30
"27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit
adultery:
28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her
hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is
profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy
whole body should be cast into hell.
30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is
profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy
whole body should be cast into hell."
How about killing?
Matt. 5:21,22
"21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and
whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause
shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother,
Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool,
shall be in danger of hell fire."
Also I John 4:19-21
"19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that
loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath
not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his
brother also."
Love is strong, it is standing for the right and rejecting the wrong, the evil. It is speaking truth to those around you...
It is living as Jesus lived, dying to self and living for the Lord and for others.
