Chapter 2
Which way do we go?

Joe is home with his girlfriend and he starts asking her some of the questions that was put before him today at work. She listens for a few minutes, and then she asks, "Joe, what is wrong? You don't seem like your normal playful self. Are these things bugging you that badly? Joe, honey, we have to live and let live. We need to give people their space to do what they feel is right. Let them do their thing as we are doing ours. Don't you agree with that?" Joe looks up from his plate of food that hasn't been touched yet. "Baby, I love you but these things are much more important than you or I have ever thought them to be. Can we really have our own little beliefs and they contradict the beliefs of others and even of common sense. Do you believe that we can believe things that are totally the opposite from one another and yet we both can be right? How can that be? If I believe Buddha saves and you believe that Mohammed saves, are we both correct? Especially if they both claimed to be the one and only way?" "But honey, they didn't. They knew that they didn't have all the answers, they had some enlightenment but not all, they were seeing clearer all the time."

Joe sat there quietly a few minutes and then he said, "Baby, there was a man who walked this planet and he claimed to be the only way to God. He made that claim and the ones who follow him say that he rose from the dead to prove that he was who he said he was, the Son of God in human flesh, the Saviour of the world. What about him, honey?" She said, "Joe, enough of this for now. I have to wash dishes. Eat your food!" Cindy gets up from the table, looking upset, confused, and maybe a little bit angry but puzzled also. She is wondering where this is going to take them.

About an hour later, after the kitchen was spotless again, she goes looking for Joe. She finds him in the living room reading but then she sees what he is reading and she can't believe her eyes. She says,"Joe, what is going on with you?" He asks Cindy to sit down beside him and to listen to this. She sits down and he begins to read John 3:16,17 to her. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." He turns to her, "Honey, I learned those verses when I was a kid. I haven't thought about them lately. Been too busy with life, I guess! Why would God love this world? Everyday I read in the paper someone else being killed or some drunk running over somebody, or people being caught with a bunch of dope, so high not knowing what was gong on, or little kids cussing out their parents, those who spent years of their life raising them and sending them to school and they get there and learn how to control, overthrow family life. And then on the other side of the fence, we have killed millions of babies in the womb and most are killed for social reasons such as finishing high school, to keep their parents from finding out, so their figure won't get out of shape, etc. People want to do their 'own' thing as we are doing ours. Honey, is this really what it is all about, to live and die not knowing why we are here. Is it really to be happy or is there a higher purpose, much higher!"

Cindy looks at the wall, in a daze, so to speak. "Joe, I enjoy things such as sex, being popular, having money, being entertained by movies, music, going out to dinner and other places. I really enjoy them Joe, is that so wrong?" "Cindy, I enjoy those things too but there is something off balance here, I am not sure what it is but there is something out of place. Honey, pray with me. I know that I have never asked you to do such a thing but could we?" Cindy reaches her hand out. Joe grabs it and bows his head. "God, if you are there? I don't know if you are or if you aren't. I don't know if you hear me or if you are too busy? I don't know what I am doing, to tell you the truth. I went to the churches when I was a kid but then I grew up and I figured that was something to keep me in line so I don't do bad things like kill, rob banks and whatever else is terrible. I talked with Clyde today and he is a nice guy, I thought kind of weird, always reading that Bible of his. Why do we do the things we do God? If you really hear us then show us what the problem is in our lives. Show us the reason why we are here. In Jesus' name. Amen!" Joe opens his eyes and there is a midst on them and so it is with Cindy. "Cindy, I must know!" "I know Joe, and so must I!" They don't even turn on the t.v. tonight and that is strange. When they go to bed, it is just that- they go to bed to go to sleep. But neither sleep very well but they don't talk to each other either since neither knows that the other is still awake.
